Moving Current is dedicated to improving arts
awareness in all ages and
communities.
Our small touring group, “Dancing Verbs, Adverbs
and Similes” is currently presented to area
public and private elementary schools with the
help of the Arts Council of Hillsborough County.
Last year, over 2,600 students in area
elementary schools attended where they learned
about dance, choreography and improvisation. The
performance is a look at dance from the inside.
Children choose verbs, adverbs and similes out
of a hat and the dancers then put the action
words to movement and music. The words come
alive right in front of their eyes!
Moving
Current is also involved in community projects
such as their annual work with the Forever
Moving Dance Group, dancers and movers ages
40-80, of the Life Enrichment Center. This
project is an annual event for Moving Current,
Forever Moving, Blake High School for the Arts
choreography students and magnet arts elementary
students. This widely varied group of
individuals come together in a series of
workshops where they interrelate through art and
dance created from their own words and movement.
The culmination of this project is performed on
the annual NewGrounds concert in May.
Moving
Current has conducted company residencies and
lecture demonstrations in many educational
programs and offered classes in contemporary and
aerial dance, Skinner Releasing, Kinetic
Awareness, improvisation and more. For each
concert, we also include a special student
matinee, via the Hillsborough County Performing
Arts Field Trip Guide, directed towards middle
and high school ages. At the closing of each of
these performances, Moving Current
choreographers, dancers and guest artists
participate in a talk back with the students.
Another project, entitled On the Spot is an
improvisational based concert series performed
in non-traditional venues such as museums,
outdoor locations, schools and various other
non-theater performance spaces. Moving Current
has performed On the Spot in venues such as the
Cuban Club, Studio at 620 and Hillsborough
Community College dance studios.
The
collective’s outreach efforts are furthered
through ticket subsidies, sponsored in part by
the Arts Council of Hillsborough County. This
program allows Moving Current to offer tickets
at very low rate to organizations such as the
Boys & Girls Club, Pyramid and others.
Finally, Moving Current annually presents
NewGrounds an entire concert, dedicated to
presenting emerging dance artists and their
work. Since 2001, its success has grown at a
tremendous pace. Please see the NewGrounds page
for more information.
