Founded in 1997, Moving Current Dance Collective is under the artistic direction of Erin Cardinal, Katie Cole and Cynthia Hennessy. We have found our voice in Tampa by bringing contemporary dance to the Bay Area. With a group of talented and diverse dancers, Moving Current has established itself as one of Florida’s top modern dance companies and currently the Company in Residence at the University of South Florida and was the Company in Residence at the 2007 Florida Dance Festival. Moving Current has produced 80+ evening concerts presenting local and national choreographers, dancers, aerialists, musicians, poets, actors, and visual artists. Our Chamber Group of five veteran dancers has recently performed at the Touhill Performing Arts Center, St. Louis, MO, Willow Theater, Boca Raton and The Palladium, St. Petersburg. Along with original work by Ms. Cardinal and Ms. Hennessy, we have also presented the work of nationally and internationally renowned artists such as Michael Foley, Bill Doolin, Sara Sweet Rabidoux, David Dorfman, Stephanie Skrua, Lynne Wimmer, Jennifer Nugent & Paul Matteson and many others. Throughout the season, Moving Current also presents “On the Spot” which is an improvisational based concert series performed in non-traditional venues such as museums, outdoor locations, schools and various other non-theater performance spaces. Besides promoting professional choreographers and dancers, Moving Current is also committed to arts education for students of all ages. Every year the collective conducts workshops and residencies in public schools K-12, including our original performance of “Dancing Verbs, Adverbs & Similes” that merges language arts and dance for elementary school children. We offer classes in dance to the community and annually lead an Inter-Generational project funded in part by the Arts Council of Hillsborough County and centers around the Forever Moving Dance Group, dancers and movers ages 50-85, and Hillsborough County students ages 6 - 18. This group of individuals come together to interrelate through art and dance created from their own words and movement. In addition, Moving Current produces an annual concert dedicated to emerging choreographers called NewGrounds. For 9 years, over 27 local and national choreographers and nearly 100 dancers have shared their exciting work with Tampa Bay audiences. Moving Current is supported in part by the Arts Council of Hillsborough County, the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, the Southern Arts Federation, the Knox Family Foundation, Info-lution Corporation and Pilates Bodies and many individual contributors. The collective and its directors are dedicated to bringing modern dance to the forefront of the performing arts by creating and producing work that is not only accessible to a wide audience but does so without compromising the artistic integrity of contemporary dance today.
