| If visual art could come to life it might resemble what Moving Current has to offer for local audiences… Athletically elegant, Moving Current, one of the southeastern region's top professional modern dance companies, will open its 14th season with an eclectic blend of modern dance. Artistic Directors Shelley Bourgeois, Erin Cardinal & Cindy Hennessy will offer new and restaged works. Guest Choreographer George Staib, Artistic Director of Atlanta-based Staibdance has acquired national acclaim. His choreography has been presented internationally including London, Prague and Italy and televised on Atlanta’s CBS morning show. Critics have noted his work as “magnetic, tense and euphoric – like romance itself” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution) and “strong command of a diverse movement vocabulary and [his] gift for large-cast dances.” (Dance Source Houston). In 2001 he joined the dance faculty at Emory University. The work that Mr. Staib has set on Moving Current, entitled “Lullaby”, a work for seven dancers, evolved into how minor annoyances can affect relationships and begin to destroy them, resulting therefore in a piece that looks at the dynamics between a man and a woman who can no longer coexist, and rather have come to expect and almost savor conflict. This work is exciting, innovative and brings a new voice in modern dance to the Tampa community. https://sites.google.com/site/staibdance/ Also joining Moving Current on the stage is Orange Grove Dance, founded in 2007 by Matthew Reeves and Colette Krogol. A company with a working class aesthetic that uses dance to provide an intimate perspective of people and art, has been presented several times on Moving Current’s annual NewGrounds concert. After years of working in New York and touring the world as professional dancers, Matt and Colette formed orange grove dance as a voice for their own creations. By bringing together their roots from Florida with contemporary performance technique, Orange Grove Dance has become known for creating striking visuals and art that is truly athletic. http://orangegrovedance.com/ Director Erin Cardinal offers a spin on the office life - trapped in their chairs. They whirl, twist and are sent rolling across the stage to the music of Motown. Cindy Hennessy offers a new solo for dancer Brooke Bradley and restaged quartet that investigates the feeling of falling. Shelley Bourgeois will present a physical yet elegant duet reflecting the music of the Bach cello suites. Performing on the January concert are Moving Current dancers Brooke Bradley, Katie Cole, Abraham Jarrell, Aly Coscia, Carrie Handley, Kebra Philebaum, Cardinal & Bourgeois. |
